Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

It’s known to all that Tencent build its entire empire on top of QQ IM service, and we noticed many times that Sina is also trying to leverage the popularity of its Weibo service to expand it tentacles – through the introduction of Qing weibo (Tumblr-like), real-time search engine, WebIM, 3rd apps center and so on. Not bad moves, but, all of service are still PC-based, in a time when the mobile internet is about to explode. With the launch of Weixin and iterative improvements, Tencent has successfully established its forefront in mobile era again, this might be the last thing Sina which missed out on the IM, online gaming waves and now relies heavily on online news business want to see. No More Cartoon Emoticons, Express Yourself with 3D Living Portraits

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

In our busy lives, time is of the essence and getting the message across in the shortest possible time makes a lot of difference. When we are communicating by mobile or instant messaging, it is customary to use a cute emoticon to express how we feel.  happy  sad =/ worried joking But we must have come a long way since the days of character faces. A technology company called Mach-3D™ has been working on an app called 3DoM™. . 3DoM™ is an Android mobile app that allows you to take a picture of your face or another 2 dimensional face and convert it into an interactive 3 dimensional face with various expressions, called a Living Portrait. After taking your picture, it scans your facial features to detect all the key points such as your eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows. After processing your features, your face will be added to the library. Click on your picture and automatically your face starts to express happiness, sadness, confusion and excitement. At any time, you can also select an expression for the face to make. The technology is really quite amazing, turning a simple 2D picture into a 3D picture that moves and expresses itself. [...]

ZD Net reported today that Baidu announced that China’s Ministry of Industry will invest a hefty 3 Billion yuan to support SME’s. The goal is to promote regional economic development. The first areas to enjoy the benefits of the plan are Beijing, Shanxi, Henan, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. It will gradually roll out to 31 provinces and autonomous regions. GitHub: Better Community Than Tool

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

I answered such a question on Zhihu a few days ago: How did GitHub get so popular? The founders of GitHub once mentioned how they met at a Ruby developer meetup in the book Startups Open Sourced and why they value community engagement so much. Their GitHub Drinkup gatherings which started from Bay Area and later on spread over globally into cities with large developer communities has then became a popular event organized by local people. It is so influential that turned GitHub into a genuine developer community from just a source code management tool. This is the reason. GitHub is not merely a code management tool, but rather a hacker community based on “Git”, one of the most popular technology in open source communities. This is super cool since building a high quality as well as active community is anything but a no-brainer, let alone ‘code’ is the only vernacular spoken in the community. Moreover, hackers, which I mean those who enjoy solving problems in “techie” ways here, often have broad interests, so it is hard to grab their attention for a long time. Paul Graham wrote in the beginning of one of his essays: “I know a handful of [...]

Drumo, Discover Your City with LBS Question & Answers

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

It’s rather rare to stumble upon a cool start-up from my hometown of Sydney, but as soon as I read about it on TechCrunch and figured out the Co-Founder, Elliott Risby was following us on Twitter (@technodechina), I jumped at the chance to interview him. Put simply, Drumo is a location based, Quora like question and answer function that gives people a platform to discover their city by asking people who know about the city the best. The use case is fairly simple, pick a city and ask a question to the community. For example, “Where is the best Peking Duck in Beijing?” I would say “Duck de Chine in 1949”. Drumo was co-founded by Elliott Risby and Martin Konrad. The duo is also behind a very successful creative agency and digital production studio, called Design Royale based in Sydney and New York. Started 10 months ago, the team also includes two developers and an illustrator. Elliott is responsible for design/UI and Martin oversees the programming. Both partners oversee product direction and development. After five years of Design Royale which is now doing well as an agency for clients, Elliott says “We wanted to take a step back and do [...]

How Can China and Korea Help Internet Game Addicts?

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

CNN reported last week that South Korea has implemented a controversial law called “Shutdown law” or “Cinderella law”, which bans people under the age of 16 to play games online after midnight. South Korea is infamous for having the best and most addicted gamers in the world. Their addiction in the online world has a heavy and serious toll in the real world, where about 8% of the population between 9 and 39 suffers from internet addiction, according to the National Information Society Agency. This has resulted in degenerated social interaction skills, health issues and even death. This is alarming, especially when the age group with the highest addiction rate is those who are 9 to 12 years old, at 14%. I’ve seen what game addiction can do to people. I had a university friend who played so much World of Warcraft, that half his face went numb. It can be really dangerous. But, it’s hard to say if banning gaming will really help addiction. It may even fuel it more, where gamers only want more of what they can’t get. Before I came to China, I had no idea how big the online gaming market is here. Quite simply, [...]

Qihoo360 approached the service for buying purpose as far back as 2009, though things didn’t go through then.     Related posts:Chinese Microblog Syncing Tool Discontinued Service Kaixin001 Is To Launch Its Microblogging Service, for Self-Protection Shanda In Talks With Tencent About Social Games On Weibo

Youa Spun off from Baidu to Operate Independently, Raising Tens of Millions

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Youa, the ecommerce subsidiary of Baidu announced today raising US dollars tens of millions from IDC-Accel and Qiming Venture Partners and spinning off from Baidu as an independent company, a move which is part of a broader and growing effort of the Chinese search giant to venture into the heated Chinese ecommerce market, again. Founded in Oct. 2008 by Baidu, Youa started as a direct competitor to Taobao, the de facto Chinese ecommerce ruler. However, the service fared quite well in the intensely competitive market, Baidu discontinued Youa’s service as a C2C platform, pivoting the service into a life service platform in this April with a new tagline of “finding anything you need in everyday life”. Cai Hu, the general manager of Baidu Ecommerce Division who took the realm as Youa’s new Chief Executive said that “We’re turning over a new page for Youa, which will be committed to build a comprehensive platform centered on life service and local merchants.” Youa’s transformation in this April spoke to Baidu’s failed attempt in competing with Alibaba/Taobao in the forefront of business, as of now Taobao took over north of 71.7% of China’s ecommerce market. According to a market research conducted by the [...]
